- Planting Paeonia Rockii
- Like tree peony, Paeonia rockii prefers a cold, dry climate
than a hot, wet climate. But paeonia rockii is more drought
and coldness tolerant than tree peony. It has a strong ability
of tolerating drought, and a stronger ability of tolerating
dry air. It also shows a feature of enjoying sunshine and
of enduring shade. Paeonia rockii is used to most soils
with a PH between 6.5 and 8.2, no matter loamy or lean.
However, as a plant with deep fleshy tuberous roots like
tree peony, Paeonia rockii prefers loamy and slightly acid
soils and hates excessive water. It will grow better under
a condition with enough water and loam, loose soil and circulating
air.
- Site Selection:
When the climate is appropriate, deep soil and good drainage
are the two main standards for site-selecting. Since paeonia
rockii can survive in lean and alkaline soils, it can be
planted in a larger soil range than tree peony. It can grow
well in a soil with some salt and some clay.
- Planting Directions:
Time is crucial for the seedling¡¯s survival. Autumn is the
main planting season for paeonia rockii. The fittest time
is between late September and late October. Bare roots are
planted in autumn. Please dig holes according to the size
of root which should make sure roots and radicels can stretch
to their full length. Prune the roots and radicels that
are too long.
Spring planting often starts in early and middle March,
when soils have just thawed and branches are to burgeon.
When transplanting the seedling in spring, roots and radicels
should be surrounded with as big as possible soil balls
in order to reduce the damage to them.
No matter autumn planting or spring planting, in order to
make the seedling survive and resume growing as soon as
possible, please take some measures after planting the seedling:
Firstly, cut off excessive branches, which is more important
for old paeonia rockii with long branches.
Secondly, eliminate the flower buds when they appeared,
to make sure no blossoming in the first year.
Thirdly, cut off flush bud timely when it appears on the
foot of the plants..
Fourthly, fertilize in branch growing season before the
florescence and have a fertilizing on the surface of leaves
after the florescence.
Thus, after resuming growing in the first year, the plant
grows and blossoms normally in the second year and starts
to grow exuberantly in the third year.
Wrong planting and care in the first year easily cause the
seedling¡¯s death or make the seeding spend a long time to
resume growing.
- Pruning:
The most important but often ignored things in the daily
care of paeonia rockii are selecting main branches, pruning
and eliminating redundant leaf buds, which can make the
profile of the plant more beautiful, the plant growing better
and flowering every year.
After the seedling is planted, you should select 5 to 10
of the strongest branches as the major stems and prune away
weak and small branches, which can lay a good basis for
the growth of the plant.
When the plant grows to the period for appreciation, firstly,
you should pick off remnant flowers after the florescence
in order to avoid the appearance of fruits, which may use
the nutrition in vain and block the development of flower
buds and next year¡¯s blossoming.
Secondly, eliminate the gemma of the axil on the upper side
of twigs and only keep 2 to 3 axillary buds at the base
so that they can concentrate its strength to develop into
full flower buds.
Thirdly, cut out unlignified branches above flower buds
and some branches in the interior of the shrub to form a
handsome plant.
The final but not least point is that the shoots from the
base of the plant should be cut off regularly when the plant
is in growing season in order to concentrate the nutrition
on old branches, which can guarantee a normal blossoming.
- Watering and Fertilizing:
Normally, watering and fertilizing 2-3 times every year
will achieve good effects.
The first time is ¡°flower fertilizing¡± and ¡°spring water¡±.
That is, fertilize and water paeonia rockii in early spring
when the plant starts to bud. Use quick efficient fertilizers
(organic fertilizers mixed with a few phosphorous fertilizers).
Spread fertilizer around the plant. Water them after loosening
the soil.
The second time is ¡°root fertilizing¡± and ¡°frozen water¡±.
That is, fertilize and water paeonia rockii before the dormancy
of plants in late autumn. Use enough well rotted organic
fertilizers and compost, which can speed the growth of roots
and prepare nutrition well for the plants¡¯ growth next year.
Besides, people often water before or after blooming, or
have a ¡°bud fertilizing¡± after blooming in order to speed
the development of flower buds.
When the paeonia rockii plant is in growing season, watering
is necessary according to the condition of rainfall and
soil. Damp soil without standing water is very helpful to
the growth of paeonia rockii.
